AECOM Technology awarded contract for New York City biogas project

AECOM Technology Corp., Los Angeles, has been awarded a contract to provide engineering, procurement and construction services for the Newtown Creek Renewable Natural Gas Project, located in New York City. The contract has been awarded by National Grid, in collaboration with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.

Under the contract, AECOM will design and construct a purification system for converting biogas, a byproduct obtained from the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, to renewable natural gas that can be used for residential and commercial purposes. After purification, the company will be instilling the generated pipeline-quality gas into National Grid’s the existing gas network.

AECOM e expects to complete the project by 2016. The company says the project marks the first of its kind wherein renewable gas generated from waste materials will be directly inserted into the existing regional distribution system.
