The Municipal Review Committee (MRC), a nonprofit group representing the solid waste interests of nearly 187 Maine communities and solid waste districts, approved the development of a Cantonsille, Maryland-based Fiberight facility in Hampden, Maine, a report by WLBZ-TV says.
According to the report, the discussions with Fiberight began more than a year ago after MRC decided that its current waste plant, the Penobscot Energy Recovery Co. (PERC), Orrington, Maine, was no longer a viable option.
More than $1 million will be used to develop the Fiberight facility, the report says, but Fiberight is on hold for financial approval because of PERC and Exeter, Maine-based Exeter Agri-Energy’s appeal over the facility’s permits.
If the appeal is overturned, the board would be forced to find a new way to dispose of those towns trash, according to the report. Despite the appeal, a preconstruction meeting could be held as soon as next week.
