For the ninth straight year, Waste Management (WM), Houston, has been named one of the world’s most ethical companies by Ethisphere Institute, Scottsdale, Arizona. Ethisphere’s World’s Most Ethical Companies designation recognizes companies that align principle with action, work tirelessly to make trust part of their corporate DNA and, in doing so, shape future industry standards by introducing tomorrow’s best practices today.
Waste Management is the only company listed in the environmental services category.
“Saying the right things is easy. It’s doing the right things, however, that makes the real difference,” says David
Steiner, WM pesident and CEO. “Ethical business practices are at the heart of everything our 40,000 plus teammates do every day. We’re tremendously proud of them and grateful for this recognition from Ethisphere.”
The World’s Most Ethical Company assessment is based upon the Ethisphere Institute’s Ethics Quotient (EQ) framework developed over years of research and vetted and refined by the expert advice from Ethisphere’s World’s Most Ethical Company Methodology Advisory Panel. The EQ offers a quantitative way to assess a company’s performance in an objective, consistent and standardized way. The information collected provides a comprehensive sampling of definitive criteria of core competencies, rather than all aspects of corporate governance, risk, sustainability, compliance and ethics, Ethisphere says.
Scores are generated in five key categories: ethics and compliance program (35 percent); corporate citizenship and responsibility (20 percent); culture of ethics (20 percent); governance (15 percent); and leadership, innovation and reputation (10 percent).
