The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), through its Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) Web Academy series is hosting a free webinar Jan. 15, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. EST to address the problem of wasted food and share information about the Food Waste Reduction Alliance (www.foodwastealliance.org), a unique collaboration working to address it.

The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and National Restaurant Association (NRA) represent three big trade associations tackling one big problem: food waste. Together they founded the Food Waste Reduction Alliance, an industry-led initiative focused on reducing food waste by increasing food donation and sending unavoidable food waste to productive use (energy, composting, etc.) and away from landfills.

Webinar speakers include:

  • Gail Tavill, vice president of packaging and sustainable productivity at ConAgra Foods, Omaha, Nebraska, leading strategies that influence packaging, product, process and policy design for long-term sustainability of the business and the industry. She plays a leadership role on the Food Waste Reduction Alliance, contributing to the recent publication of the Best Practices Toolkit and currently chairing the policy committee.
  • Jason Wadsworth is Wegmans sustainability manager, has been with the company for 25 years and is a third generation employee of the Rochester, New York-based supermarket chain. Wadsworth is responsible for the development and implementation of sustainability programs by partnering with leadership and key functional areas, focused on outcomes that are good for the environment, people and Wegmans. Wadsworth is a founding member of the Food Marketing Institute’s Sustainability Executive Committee and is also active in FMI’s Animal Welfare Committee and the Food Waste Reduction Alliance.
