U.S. EPA Integrated Waste Management Hierarchy and essential preprocessing components
The Integrated Waste Management Hierarchy adopted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) is designed to show the most environmentally preferable options for waste management. The hierarchy places emphasis on reducing, reusing, and recycling the majority of wastes.
The following figure shows an overview of some of the necessary components of a pre-processing facility. Many of these conditions are already met by advanced MRFs and transfer stations:
