Services Provided: BIOFerm specializes in anaerobic digestion (AD) technology, specifically an AD process called dry fermentation. Dry AD technology, in contrast to wet AD, utilizes higher total solids content (25 percent and up) feedstock. The biomass stays stationary within the chambers, no additional liquid input is required, and the feedstock is moved via front-end loader rather than pumped as slurry.

BIOFerm™ USA Inc., dba BIOFerm™ Energy Systems, was founded in Madison, Wis., in 2007 and belongs to the Viessmann Group of Cos.

BIOFerm expanded beyond dry fermentation in 2011 by providing wet fermentation technology from Schmack Biogas GmbH, another member of the Viessmann Group.

The companies have built a combined total of more than 280 biogas plants in Germany, Europe, Japan and the U.S.

In 2012, BIOFerm has been highlighting its small-scale anaerobic digestion (AD) system. This containerized, plug-and-play digester is ideal for smaller waste operations, according to the company.BIOFerm’s first small-scale digester is currently being constructed in Wisconsin and is expected to be fully operational within a few months.

Q: What makes you different from your competitors?

A: BIOFerm has a broad range of anaerobic digestion system types for our clients to choose from. Wet systems, dry fermentation, complete mix digesters and small-scale containerized digesters are just a few of the systems we offer. BIOFerm prides itself in its ability to tailor digesters to the client’s feedstock and energy output needs and specifications. Additionally, we provide performance guarantee with the financial backing of the Viessmann Group. With 280 plants worldwide, BIOFerm Energy Systems has perfected the AD process and can guarantee the success of its technology in the long-term. Currently, BIOFerm has the only fully operational, dry fermentation digester in North America. The potential that this system offers for energy recovery from organics brings it to the foreground of new waste management technology.

Q: Where do you see your company five years from now?
