Sonoco Recycling LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hartsville, South Carolina-based Sonoco, has awarded Procter & Gamble's (P&G's) Iams Russellville, Arkansas, facility a gold-tier Sonoco Sustainability Star Award for achieving zero-waste-to-landfill status.

Rodger Fuller, president of Sonoco Recycling, says, “Moving landfill waste from five percent to zero is often the most difficult for our clients. The Russellville team was able to overcome this hurdle and successfully achieve zero-waste-to-landfill status. We're pleased to present them with this much-deserved sustainability star award.”

The Iams facility diverts materials from the landfill using composting, recycling and incineration. More than 85 percent of the plant's waste is composted, 11 percent is recycled and the remaining 4 percent is used for waste-to-energy, Sonoco says.

To make it easier to transport waste to incineration facilities, Iams removed the plant's front-loading container and replaced it with Gaylord boxes.

Sonoco’s Sustainability Star Award program comprises three tiers:

  • Gold Star Awards, which recognize facilities that have achieved at least 99 percent landfill diversion;
  • Silver Star Recognition, awarded to facilities achieving 95 percent landfill diversion; and
  • Bronze Awards, recognizing facilities and programs that have made significant waste reduction achievements.
