Hitachi Zosen Inova AG, (HZI) based in Zurich, Switzerland has completed the deal for Axpo Kompogas Engineering AG. Following the closing, all Axpo Kompogas plant construction activities will be transferred to HZI, the company announced.

Having acquired Kompogas’ technology, HZI has two first-class technologies for waste-to-energy (WTE) conversion. In addition to thermal solutions, it will also offer biogas facilities based on energy recovery by fermentation.

With the closing of the contractual agreements between the two companies, HZI also has acquired all of Kompogas’ licenses and know-how, as well as the brand. It also will add the majority of Kompogas’ staff. HZI has more than 80 years of experience and more than 500 reference projects worldwide in the energy recovery from waste industry.

Kompogas, which has constructed more than 70 biogas plants, has a market share of around 30 percent. The company also has a prominent position in anaerobic digestion (AD).

“The two technologies complement each other ideally, generating energy from municipal residual and green waste respectively,” says HZI CEO Franz-Josef Mengede: “Synergies will be created to allow us to develop both technologies further at HZI.”

In various regions around the world a trend is emerging towards the separate collection and recovery of biogenic waste. HZI is responding to this global development by acquiring the AD technology. The adoption of Kompogas’ technology adds another energy-from- waste technology to its portfolio, making it the first company in the world to possess both these technologies.

“We’re proud that in future we’ll be able to offer our customers the best of both thermal and biological energy-from-waste solutions. This will enable us to make an important contribution to sustainable waste-to-energy conversion worldwide,” says Franz- Josef Mengede.

HZI will retain the Kompogas brand after the acquisition, and will continue to perform all service and maintenance for existing Kompogas plants.
